On Tuesday, November 12th, 2019 at 5:45 p.m. the Clay County Sheriff’s Office was called to the 2500 mile of B24 near Spencer, Ia for a report of a car/deer collision. Upon investigation at the scene it was determined that Kortney Buettner (22) of Ayrshire, Ia was driving her 2013 Chevrolet Malibu eastbound in the 2500 mile of B24 when a deer entered the roadway. Buettner struck the deer causing an estimated $5,000 damage to the vehicle. No injuries were reported from the collision.

On Monday, November 11th, 2019 at 2:53 p.m. the Clay County Sheriff’s Office was called to the 1100 mile of Hwy 10 near Peterson, Ia for a report of a one vehicle accident. Upon investigation at the scene, it was determined that Carlos Medina of Remsen, Ia was driving a 2014 Ford F150 owned by The Hanor Company eastbound in the 1100 mile of Hwy 10 when he lost control of the vehicle and entered the ditch. The vehicle continued through a fence and came to a stop in a pasture. Damage to Medina vehicle was estimated at $1000, while the damage to the fence was estimated at $1500. Medina was cited for Failure to Maintain Control and released without incident. No injuries were reported from the accident.

Ramirez was placed under arrest and was transported to the Clay County Jail. Ramirez was charged with Speeding and No Drivers License, both Simple Misdemeanors and was held on a $472.50 cash or surety bond.

ON NOVEMBER 5TH, 2019 APPROXIMATELY 1:07 PM, THE CLAY COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE RESPONDED TO A CALL OF A VEHICLE ON IT’S TOP AT THE INTERSECTION OF 290TH AVE AND 440TH ST. UPON ARRIVAL, THE DEPUTY DID NOT LOCATE ANYONE IN OR AROUND THE AREA OF THE VEHICLE.
THE VEHICLE HAD SLIDE OFF THE SHOULDER AND DUE TO THE STEEP DITCH, OVERTURNED AND CAME TO REST ON THE ROOF. LATER, THE DRIVER WAS EVENTUALLY LOCATED AT A JOB SITE NEAR THE SCENE OF THE CRASH. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT A MINOR CHILD FROM FULDA, MN WAS OPERATING THE VEHICLE.
THE MINOR DRIVER WAS CITED FOR NO VALILD DRIVER’S LICENSE, FAILURE TO PROVIDED FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY-ACCIDENT AND FAIL TO MAINTAIN CONTROL. DAMGE TO THE VEHICLE WAS ESTIMATED AT $4,000. NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED.

INJURIES

Both drivers were transported to the Spencer Hospital due to injuries sustained during the collision.

ACCIDENT DETAILS: On Wednesday, November 6th, 2019, at 3:26 p.m. the Clay County Sheriff’s Office was called to the 2800 mile of N14 for a report of a two vehicle collision. Upon investigation at the scene, it was determined that Melony Renze (43), of Estherville, Ia was driving her 2015 Ford Explorer northbound in the 2800 Mile of N14 when she lost traction due to the ice and snow. The Renze vehicle crossed the centerline and collided with a 1998 Buick LeSabre driven southbound by Kim Andrea (60 of Milford, Ia. Both drivers were transported to the Spencer Hospital for injuries sustained during the collision. Both vehicles were totaled during the collision with the Renze vehicle sustaining an estimated $10,000 damage while the Andrea vehicle sustained an estimated $4,000 damage. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, Dickens Fire Department, Terril Fire Department, and Spencer Hospital Ambulance Service.

UPON ARRIVAL, DEPUTIES OBSERVED A 2005 JEEP WRANGLER DRIVEN BY MOHROR, ON ITS SIDE IN THE EAST DITCH. MOHROR ADVISED THE DEPUTY THAT HE WAS TRAVELING SOUTH, WHEN HE CROSSED THE BRIDGE AND LOST CONTROL. THE VEHICLE SLIDE SIDE WAYS AND LANDED ON ITS SIDE, CROSSING THE NORTH BOUND TRAFFIC LANE AND COMING TO REST ON THE PASSENGER SIDE IN THE EAST DITCH. THE BRIDGE WAS COVERED IN BLACK ICE WHICH CONTRIBUTED TO THE VEHICLE LOSING CONTROL. MOHROR WAS UNINJURIED FROM THE CRASH. ESTIMATED DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE IS APPROXIMATELY $2,000.

ACCIDENT DETAILS

On Tuesday, November 2, 2019 at approximately 1:25 p.m. the Clay County Sheriff’s Office was called to the intersection of 200th Avenue and 370th Street for a report of a two vehicle accident. Upon investigation at the scene, it was determined Jim Barglof was traveling southbound in the 3600 mile of 200th Avenue, in a 2001 Oldsmobile Silhouette, and Timothy Bates was traveling eastbound in the 1900 mile of 370th Street, in a 2008 Chrysler Town and Country. Both Barglof and Bates entered the intersection of 200th Avenue and 370th Street at the same time and collided. No injuries were reported, at the scene, from the accident. Barglof was cited for failure to yield upon entering a through highway.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Bud’s Service.

Details of Arrest: On October 29, 2019 at approximately 16:50 hours, a Clay County Deputy initiated a traffic stop, in the 3700 mile of Highway 71, on a 2002 Ford Explorer for a traffic violation. After further investigation, it was determined Eiesenhower Rochell III was violating his resticted license. Rochell was placed under arrest for driving while license suspended. As Rochell was being searched by the deputy, a bag of marijuana was located in his pocket. Rochell was transported to the Clay County Jail where he was held to appear before a magistrate. Rochell was charged with driving while license suspended, and possession of a controlled substance - marijuana - 1st offense.

ACCIDENT DETAILS:On Tuesday, October 29th, 2019 at approximately 3:48 p.m. the Clay County Sheriff’s Office was called to the 2000 Mile of B40 for a report of a two vehicle accident. Upon investigation at the scene, it was determined that Roger Stephas (81) of Spencer, Ia was driving a 2001 Sterling Semi eastbound in the 2000 mile of B40 and began taking a wide turn into a field drive on the south side of the road. Justin Rottinghaus (22) of La Porte City, Ia was following Stephas in a 2018 Ford Expedition and failed to slow down behind the turning Stephas vehicle, colliding with the trailer of the semi. No injuries were reported from the collision. No visible damage occurred to the Stephas vehicle and an estimated $8000 damage occurred to the Rottinghaus vehicle. Stephas was issued a citation for Improper Use of Lanes and Rottinghaus was issued a citation for Failure to Stop in Assured Clear Distance.

ACCIDENT DETAILS: Unit 1 was traveling north in the 2900 mile of 110th Ave. and lost control of his vehicle and entered the east ditch. Unit 1 attempted to back up and got stuck. The ditch grass caught on fire from Unit 1’s hot exhaust pipes which led Unit 1 to catching on fire and becoming fully engulfed in flames. Details of Arrest: On 9/18/19 the Clay County Sheriff's Office investigated a single unit motor vehicle crash. The driver of the vehicle, Jones, was not on scene wen deputies arrived but was located at his residence. It was believed Jones was under the influence of alcohol. A search warrant was applied for and executed for a specimen of his blood for chemical testing which was sent to the Department of Criminal Investigations Crime Lab.

Weeks later, the Clay County Sheriff's Office received the test results. The results indicated that Jones was over the legal limit to operate a motor vehicle. Jones came to the Sheriff's Office on 10/16/19 and was cited into court for the above offenses.

ACCIDENT DETAILS

On Friday, October 4th, 2019 at approximately 10:00 a.m. the Clay County Sheriff’s Office was called to the 1100 mile of Hwy 10 near Peterson, Ia for a report of a two vehicle accident. Upon investigation it was determined that Bryce Edwards (24) of Primghar, Ia was driving a 2000 Peterbilt Semi-Truck, owned by Nicholson & Edwards Trucking Inc, eastbound in the 1000 mile of Hwy 10 when he came across James Sikora of Spencer, Ia driving a 2017 Ford F-150 , owned by the Iowa Department of Transportation. According to the drivers of both vehicles, Sikora was backing onto the highway from a field drive and both parties did not see one another due to a curve in the roadway. Edwards was able to pass the Sikora vehicle, but struck the passenger side mirror causing an estimated $300 damage to the DOT vehicle and an estimated $500 damage to the Nicholson & Edwards Trucking vehicle. No injuries were reported at the scene and no citations were issued due to lack of damage.
